These savory, buttery breadsticks look exactly like creepy witch fingers with almond fingernails. They are quick to make, use simple ingredients, and are guaranteed to be the star of any Halloween party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
  • 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) cold whole milk
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • About 24 slivered almonds (for fingernails)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for garlic butter brush)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (for garlic butter brush)
  • Pinch of salt (for garlic butter brush)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and dried oregano.
  3. Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or two forks, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs with some pea-sized butter pieces remaining.
  4. Pour the cold milk into the flour-butter mixture. Stir with a fork until the dough just comes together. It will look shaggy and a little dry.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead it 4 or 5 times, just until it forms a cohesive ball. Do not over-knead.
  6. Cut the dough into 12 equal pieces, each roughly the size of a golf ball.
  7. Take one piece of dough and roll it between your palms into a log about 4 inches long. Gently taper one end to look like a fingertip and leave the other end slightly thicker. Place on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with all 12 pieces.
  8. Using the back of a small knife, gently press horizontal lines across each finger to create knuckle creases. Press a little deeper at the ‘joint’ areas. Then, using the tip of the knife, gently press small vertical lines near the knuckles to create wrinkles.
  9. Press one slivered almond firmly into the tapered tip of each finger. The almond should stick out slightly, like a nail.
  10. In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush this mixture over each finger breadstick.
  11. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until the fingers are golden brown and puffed slightly.
  12. While the breadsticks are still warm, mix the melted butter with garlic powder and salt. Brush this mixture generously over each finger.
  13. Let them rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before serving. Best served warm.

Notes

Keep all ingredients cold for flaky texture. If almonds brown too quickly, tent with foil. For extra gnarled fingers, gently press dough with fingertips before adding knuckle lines. Arrange fingers chaotically on the baking sheet for a creepier effect.
