A quick and easy cheesy tuna melt sandwich combining creamy tuna salad with sharp cheddar cheese and crispy buttered bread, perfect for lunch or casual dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (5 oz / 140 g) tuna in water, drained
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 small celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped red onion or shallot (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 4 slices hearty bread (sourdough, rye, or whole wheat)
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese (or Swiss, provolone)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tuna Salad (5 minutes): In a medium mixing bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, chopped celery, and red onion (if using). Add the lemon juice, then season with salt and pepper. Mix gently until evenly incorporated.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich (5 minutes): Lay out the bread slices. Spread the tuna salad evenly over two slices. Top each with two slices of sharp cheddar cheese, then place the remaining bread slices on top.
  3. Butter the Bread (2 minutes): Spread softened butter evenly on the outside of each sandwich slice.
  4. Cook the Sandwich (8-10 minutes): Heat skillet over medium heat. Place sandwiches buttered side down. Cook 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy. Flip and cook another 4-5 minutes, pressing gently with a spatula. Lower heat if bread browns too fast before cheese melts.
  5. Serve Warm (immediate): Remove from pan and let rest 1-2 minutes. Slice diagonally and enjoy warm.

Notes

If cheese isn’t melting fast enough, cover pan loosely with lid for 1-2 minutes. Toast bread lightly before assembling if thick to prevent sogginess. Use softened butter for even spreading and crisp crust. Drain tuna well and avoid too much mayo to prevent soggy sandwich.
