This homemade fire cider is a bold, immune-boosting tonic made with raw garlic, ginger, horseradish, and cayenne. It’s a versatile, cost-effective wellness ritual that lasts for months and can be customized to your taste.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 10 cloves garlic, crushed or sliced
  • 34 inches fresh horseradish root, peeled and grated
  • 23 inches fresh ginger root, sliced thinly
  • 23 inches fresh turmeric root, sliced thinly
  • 1 jalapeño or serrano pepper, sliced
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper flakes (or 1 whole dried cayenne pepper)
  • Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (enough to cover ingredients)
  • ¼ cup raw honey, or more to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash and chop all produce. Crush garlic cloves, grate horseradish and ginger, slice turmeric, lemon, and jalapeño into thin rounds.
  2. Layer ingredients in a clean glass jar: start with onion, then garlic, horseradish, ginger, turmeric, jalapeño, lemon slices, rosemary, black peppercorns, and cayenne. Do not pack too tightly.
  3. Pour raw apple cider vinegar over ingredients until completely submerged. Use a wooden spoon or chopstick to release air bubbles. Leave about 1 inch of headspace.
  4. Seal the jar tightly (use a plastic lid or parchment paper between jar and metal lid to prevent corrosion). Shake well. Place in a cool, dark place for 2 to 4 weeks. Shake gently every few days.
  5. After 2 weeks, taste the cider. If strong enough, strain through a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth. Press solids to extract liquid.
  6. Stir in raw honey at room temperature. Start with ¼ cup and adjust to taste. Once dissolved, funnel into clean storage bottles. Seal tightly and label with date.

Notes

Do not add honey early; add after steeping to preserve enzymes. Ensure all ingredients are submerged to prevent mold. Grate horseradish for maximum heat. Label jar with start and strain dates. Store in refrigerator for up to 6 months. Never heat directly to preserve beneficial properties.
