easy homemade uncrustables recipe - featured image

A simple and quick recipe to make fresh, crustless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that are perfect for lunchboxes, picnics, or snacks. These homemade Uncrustables are easy to prepare, customizable, and free from preservatives.

Ingredients

  • Soft white sandwich bread (fresh, square slices)
  • Peanut butter (creamy or chunky, natural preferred)
  • Jelly or jam (strawberry, grape, raspberry, or homemade)
  • Optional: butter or margarine (for sealing bread and preventing sogginess)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace and ingredients: Lay out bread slices on a cutting board. Use fresh sandwich bread at room temperature. Gather peanut butter and jam, stirring if needed. (5 minutes)
  2. Optional: Lightly roll the bread with a rolling pin to loosen the crumb and make sealing easier. (2 minutes)
  3. Spread about 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of peanut butter evenly over the entire slice, reaching close to the edges. This acts as a moisture barrier. (3 minutes)
  4. Spoon about 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of jelly on top of the peanut butter and spread gently, leaving a small border around the edge. (3 minutes)
  5. Place another bread slice on top of the filling, aligning edges carefully. (1 minute)
  6. Use a biscuit cutter or glass to press firmly down through the sandwich, cutting a perfect round shape. Press all around the edges to seal the filling inside. (5 minutes)
  7. Remove excess bread crusts or save them for breadcrumbs. (1 minute)
  8. Wrap each sandwich tightly in plastic wrap or place in an airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. (2 minutes)

Notes

Press firmly when sealing edges to prevent jelly from oozing out. Spread peanut butter first to create a moisture barrier and avoid soggy bread. Chill bread slightly if it tears during cutting. For freezing, use slightly stale bread for better texture after thawing. Thaw frozen sandwiches overnight in the fridge or microwave briefly on low power.
