Ingredients

Scale
  • Frozen French fries (or fresh potatoes, cut into wedges)
  • Cooking oil (for frying or baking)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup salsa
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a Tex Mex blend)
  • Chopped fresh cilantro
  • Diced jalapeños (optional)
  • Sour cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the French fries according to the package instructions or fry them in hot oil until golden and crispy. Set aside on paper towels to drain excess oil if frying.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess grease. Stir in chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes to let the spices bloom. Set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until lightly golden. Slowly add the beef broth, whisking to prevent lumps. Stir in salsa, garlic powder, and onion powder. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens.
  4. Place the cooked fries on a large serving plate or individual bowls. Sprinkle half the cheese over the hot fries. Spoon the seasoned ground beef on top, followed by the Tex Mex gravy.
  5. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the dish and let it melt. Garnish with fresh cilantro, jalapeños, and a dollop of sour cream if desired.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy the deliciously bold flavors!

Notes

[‘If baking fries, spread them in a single layer for even crispiness.’, ‘Use freshly grated cheese for better melting and flavor.’, ‘Adjust the spice level by using mild salsa or adding extra chili powder.’, ‘Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.’]
