These crispy air fryer French toast sticks with cinnamon sugar are quick, easy, and deliver a perfect balance of crispy texture and cozy cinnamon sweetness, making mornings feel special without fuss or mess.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Thick-cut white bread or Texas toast (or brioche for extra richness)
  • 3 large eggs, beaten
  • ½ cup (120 ml) whole milk or 2% milk (or unsweetened almond/oat milk for dairy-free)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • Butter or cooking spray for brushing or spraying the bread sticks
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting
  • Optional: maple syrup or jam for dipping

Instructions

  1. Slice your loaf into sticks about 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. If bread is fresh, let the cut sticks rest on the counter for 15 minutes to dry slightly.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together 3 large eggs, ½ cup (120 ml) milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon until smooth.
  3. In a separate shallow bowl, combine ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon for the cinnamon sugar coating.
  4. Working in batches, dip each bread stick into the custard mixture, turning to coat all sides. Let excess drip off (about 10-15 seconds per stick).
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C) and let it run empty for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Lightly brush or spray the sticks with butter or oil. Arrange them in a single layer in the air fryer basket with space between sticks.
  7. Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crisp. Watch carefully after 7 minutes to avoid burning.
  8. Immediately after cooking, toss the hot French toast sticks in the cinnamon sugar mixture so it sticks nicely.
  9. Serve warm with maple syrup, fruit jam, or yogurt for dipping.

Notes

Use slightly stale bread or let fresh bread rest 15 minutes before dipping to prevent soggy sticks. Toss sticks in cinnamon sugar immediately after cooking for best coating. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket for even crispiness. If sticks are undercooked inside but browned outside, lower temperature to 350°F and increase cook time slightly. Can bake in oven at 400°F for 12-15 minutes or pan-fry if no air fryer is available.
