  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt or kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper (optional)
  • Optional toppings: sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped green onions, crispy bacon bits, butter

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the potatoes thoroughly using a vegetable brush to remove dirt. Dry well with a clean towel.
  2. Prick each potato 4-6 times with a fork or skewer to allow steam to escape.
  3. Rub each potato evenly with about 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of olive or vegetable oil.
  4. Sprinkle each potato with about 1 teaspoon (5 grams) of coarse salt, rubbing it gently into the skin. Add freshly ground black pepper if desired.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket in a single layer without touching.
  7. Cook for 35-40 minutes, flipping the potatoes halfway through (around 18-20 minutes) using tongs.
  8. Check for doneness by inserting a skewer or knife into the thickest part; it should slide in easily. Alternatively, check if the internal temperature reaches 210°F (99°C). If not done, cook for an additional 5 minutes and recheck.
  9. Remove the potatoes carefully and let them rest for 5 minutes before slicing open.
  10. Add your favorite toppings such as butter, sour cream, cheese, or chives and serve.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and crispiness. Prick potatoes 4-6 times to prevent bursting. Flip potatoes halfway through cooking for even browning. For a lower oil option, use cooking spray instead of rubbing oil, though skin may be less crispy. Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 350°F for 8-10 minutes to restore crisp skin. Avoid microwaving to maintain texture.
