Scale
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour (or use a gluten-free blend for dietary needs)
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups (about 700g) apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons (15g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup (40g) rolled oats (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan. Optionally, line the pan with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups (250g) of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup (100g) of granulated sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add 1 cup (226g) of softened butter and use a pastry cutter or fork to mix until crumbly. Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of your prepared pan.
  3. Peel, core, and thinly slice 6 cups (about 700g) of apples. In a large bowl, toss the apples with 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar, 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 2 tablespoons (15g) flour, and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust.
  4. Combine 1 cup (125g) of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar, 1/2 cup (113g) melted butter, 1/2 cup (40g) rolled oats (if using), and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a bowl. Mix until crumbly, then sprinkle evenly over the apple layer.
  5. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before cutting.
